Briefing Papers

Briefing Paper on Institutional Repositories - a briefing paper for senior management teams on the issues and use of institutional repositories. March 2004

Resources

SHERPA Poster - a Powerpoint slide for use as a printed A1 poster, showing the use of institutional repositories in the UK, with supporting information on the SHERPA partners and SHERPA projects.

Publication and Deposition in an Eprint Repository - a set of Powerpoint slides to illustrate the place of repository use within the traditional publication process.

Eprints, Repositories and Metadata Harvesting - a set of Powerpoint slides to accompany a presentation showing the way that metadata can be harvested and searched to find a specific eprint within multiple repositories.

Establishing a National Network of Repositories - including guideline costing for establishing and maintaining an institutional repository. This formed a supplementary submission to the House of Commons Science and Technology Committee for their Inquiry into Scientific Communications

Distribution of UK Higher Education Repositories - 2004 saw a rapid growth in the number of institutional repositories in UK Higher Education and the establishment of a backbone for any future national network of repositories. Advocates and those interested in the spread of the repositories might find this information useful, as it puts the growth of repositories in context against existing institutional groupings - the top universities by research funding, the Russell Group and the 1994 Group.

Diagram of repository use - this diagram appeared in the January 2005 issue of the JISC publication "JISC Inform", accompanying a article on Institutional Repositories and on SHERPA. It shows an overall view of repository use by various stakeholders. The diagram is available here with permission of JISC.

Fifteen common concerns - there are a number of recurring misunderstandings and concerns which often arise in discussions regarding repository use. This web page lists the most common along with clarification of each point.

Introduction to metadata requirements - metadata issues are fundamental to the design and the functioning of an eprints repository. This introductory document produced as part of SHERPA work gives a summary of the issues involved.

Selection Criteria for the Preservation of e-prints - this SHERPA document provides guidance on methods of identifying potential risks to e-prints, prioritising content to be preserved, and methods of implementing preventive measures to ensure content remains accessible in the long-term.

Report on Preservation Standards - this provides a summary of existing standard practices, guidelines, and procedures that will allow a repository to consider long-term implications when storing e-prints. It looks at the OAIS model for preservation, the rights that are necessary for preservation and the current standards of metadata for this purpose.

Two model licences - this document includes model deposit licences, on which to base an institution's policy and documentation. The legal aspects of these licences have been checked by JISC Legal. However, this does not constitute legal advice, and the reader must consult their own legal team before making use of either of these licences.

SHERPA/RoMEO - this database records a selection of publisher's copyright transfer agreements and categorises them according to the permissions given by the publishers for authors to self-archive material.
