Open Access Archiving

Open Access Tick Whether to Archive: * Requires deposition in Open Access archives

Open Access Publishing

* as an article with immediate paid-for open access (Alternative)
  Publishing Conditions: * Costs of open access publishing should be included in funding applications

General

  General Conditions: * Effective for all new projects from 01-Nov-2012
* The Department for International Development encourages compliance for all earlier projects
* Applies to all projects funded totally or partly by the Department for International Development
* Policy also applies to research commissioned through a third party using DFID funds.
* In exceptional circumstances, access to DFID research outputs may be restricted.
* Open Access Publishing is preferred over Self-archiving
* Metadata to all outputs must be deposited in R4D
* and include a link to the full-text.
* For books and book chapters, a request should be made to publisher for right to make open access in part or whole
* 500 word synopsis and a table of contents of Books and book chapters to be deposited in R4D
* Open Licenses such as Creative Commons are encouraged, CC-BY preferred.
* Open Access and Data Management Plan to be included in Project Design.
* Open access activity is to be reported during project cycle.
* Set statement to accompany all research outputs.
* Embargo period may be extended on agreement with DFID, for publication in arts, humanities and social sciences.
* Non-peer-review journal output, should be deposited as soon as possible.
* A synopsis of Books and book chapters to be deposited in R4D

Data Archiving Policy

Open Access Tick Whether to Archive: * Requires deposition in Open Access archives
  What to Archive: * Unpublished data
* Research data
Open Access Tick When to Archive: * Must be archived within 12 months after project completion
  Where to Archive: * In appropriate institutional repositories (Optional)
* In appropriate disciplinary repositories (Optional)
* In named repositories... (Alternative)
* R4D (Alternative)
  General Conditions: * Effective for all new projects from 01-Nov-2012
* Applies to all projects funded totally or partly by the Department for International Development
* Retain and provide free on request raw datasets for a minimum of 5 years after project completion.
* Software must use free or open source software licenses and be deposited in a suitable open software repository
* Video, audio and images must be available digitally and in the public domain. All metadata for these outputs must be deposited in R4D.
* A case against dataset deposit may be made in Access and Data Management Plan, e.g. legal, ethical or commercial constraint.
